The local cuisine is a flavorful fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences, offering a unique dining experience. If you’re planning a trip and want to try freshly caught seafood and boldly spiced local dishes, this Zanzibar food guide has everything you need to eat your way through the islands.

The Altezza Travel team has compiled a list of Zanzibar’s top restaurants, offering excellent food, stunning island views, and the perfect setting to unwind in the evening.

KEY FACTS
If you want to try street food, head to the Forodhani Night Market after sunset. Here, you can sample the famous Zanzibar pizza, urojo soup, and other local delicacies.
It’s best to book a table in advance at popular restaurants. Some places may also ask for a deposit.
If you're planning to eat at seafood restaurants, be sure to ask about the catch of the day. Not everything on the menu may be available, but you'll get the freshest options they have to offer.
Among the restaurants with stunning panoramic views, The Rock, Emerson on Hurumzi, and 6 Degrees South are especially popular.
Top restaurants in Zanzibar where you can try traditional local dishes include Lukmaan, Fisherman's Grill, Taarab, and several others.
In addition to the Forodhani Night Market, Zanzibar also features Mapacha and Bento-Paje food courts.
If you’re looking not just to have dinner but also to enjoy a lively evening in a bar-like atmosphere, be sure to check out Livingstone's, The 5th, and Mercury's.
Great vegetarian menus are available at popular spots like ZanziBarista and Mr. Kahawa.

The picturesque setting of The Rock restaurant attracts many tourists, so it’s wise to book a table in advance — ideally a week ahead during peak season. This charming little restaurant sits atop a rock formation in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and during high tides in Zanzibar, guests arrive by boat. The Rock’s menu offers an excellent selection of dishes made from the freshest seafood, which you can enjoy surrounded by fantastic sea views.

Stunning We had an amazing experience at The Rock! Booking was effortless, and from start to finish, everything exceeded our expectations. We tried the chicken skewers and the steak on the stick—both were cooked to perfection. The cocktails were fantastic, but the real highlight was dessert—the Tanzanite and Chocococoloco were absolutely divine. All of this was enjoyed in the breathtaking, otherworldly setting and awesome service from the team that makes The Rock so special. A truly unforgettable dining experience—I highly recommend it!

Great place for sunset and food. Great for sunset cocktails. We had samosas, calamari and snapper. All were very good, but the fish cookery was exceptional. Highly recommended.
