has announced a ban on the use of foreign currencies for payments within the country, including US dollars, euros, and British pounds. From now on, all purchases, sales of goods and services, and other transactions must be conducted in Tanzanian shillings.
«Under these Regulations, pricing and payment for all goods and services within the country must be in Tanzanian Shillings. Therefore, it is an offence to quote, advertise, or indicate prices in foreign currency, to compel, facilitate, or accept payment in foreign currency, or to refuse payment made in Tanzanian Shillings,» reads the official notice from the Bank of Tanzania dated May 2.
Foreign citizens, including tourists, are now required to exchange currency through commercial banks or authorized exchange bureaus within Tanzania. There are no restrictions on using bank cards or other digital payment methods.
There are only a few exceptions where payment in foreign currency is allowed — for example, in duty-free shops. Read more about currency exchange rules, payment methods, and current prices for 2025 in our article about Tanzanian currency.
Updated May 14, 2025: An exception has been made for the tourism industry. Tour operators are now allowed to issue invoices and accept payments in foreign currencies when dealing with international tourists. However, for transactions within the country, such as at restaurants, shops, taxis, and similar services, travelers must use Tanzanian shillings.
FAQs
What currency should you bring to Tanzania?
It’s best to bring new-design US dollars (bills issued in 2009 or later). Euros and British pounds can also be exchanged, but in smaller towns, this might be more difficult and the exchange rate may be less favorable.
How much cash can you bring into Tanzania?
No more than $10,000 USD (approx. €9,200 or £7,900) per person or the equivalent in another currency. If you need to bring more, you’ll have to fill out a customs declaration. The same rules apply when leaving the country. Foreign tourists are not allowed to export Tanzanian shillings.
Where’s the best place to exchange currency?
At exchange bureaus or bank branches. Avoid exchanging on markets, in shops, or with locals — even if the rate seems favorable.
Can you pay with a bank card?
Yes, you can. However, be prepared for a 3.5% fee on cashless payments, which is charged by Tanzanian banks.
