Wild Trails of Tarangire – 3-Day Immersive Safari with Walking & Night Game Drive
Wild Trails of Tarangire – 3-Day Immersive Safari with Walking & Night Game Drive
This 3-day itinerary is a rare chance to explore Tarangire National Park in depth – not just pass through it. While most safari-goers visit Tarangire for a single day, you’ll stay two nights inside the park, giving you early access to game drives and a chance to experience its quieter, wilder corners.
Tarangire is often called Tanzania’s best-kept secret – a vast, golden savannah dotted with ancient baobabs and home to the country’s second-largest elephant population. The park is also a birding paradise with over 500 species, and hosts herds of zebras, wildebeest, and other antelope species, including oryx.
With its proximity to Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport, this route is perfect both for those flying in just for safari or relaxing after a Kilimanjaro climb. Accommodation is in a permanent tented camp, offering an authentic bush feel. On this tour, you’ll also enjoy a guided walking safari and a night game drive – two rare activities not allowed in most national parks like Serengeti!
Special offer: Right now this tour includes a complimentary upgrade to Lolkisale Camp, a beautiful 4-star tented camp, offered at the price of a 3-star accommodation – exclusively for Altezza Travel guests!
* The special offer is valid for travel in 2025. If you're planning a trip in 2026, please get in touch with our travel managers to confirm the updated pricing.

Gran Melia Arusha provides food catering in three restaurants: Saba Saba, Rooftop, The Grill.

Today your safari will take place in Tarangire National Park. This is one of the most interesting places in Tanzania! The river of the same name flows through the park, where giraffes, zebras, antelopes and buffaloes come to drink. These animals attract predators, which is why a lot of lions live in Tarangire. You will definitely see them during your trip.
In the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only source of drinking water for many kilometers around. Because of this, large herds of elephants come to Tarangire, making Tarangire the home to the largest population of elephants in Northern Tanzania for most of the year (especially June - October and December - March). Elephants are not at all intimidated by visitors to the park, and they often come quite close to cars. This is completely safe - since elephants have no enemies in their natural nature they are naturally curious and unafraid.
Tarangire National Park is also known for its ancient baobab trees. These massive trees are larger and older than any other park in continental Africa. The scenery, accented with these signatory trees is simply stunning.
A night safari lasts a couple of hours, usually starting right after dinner. At night, savannah transforms into a different world, where nocturnal animals like genets, civet cats, porcupines, and adorable bush babies come into spotlight. A chance of seeing predators who mostly hunt at night — like lions and elusive leopards — will keep you on the edge of your seat. Familiar "daytime" animals are revealed in a whole new light — literally! Your guide's special wildlife-friendly torchlight might catch sight of hippos cutting through the bush or a herd of buffalos at rest.
Night drives are less popular due to the reduced chances of seeing animals, but this often means you'll have the landscape to yourself. The thrill is greater at night, as the limited view and sounds of the bush suggest wildlife is near, even if unseen. Here's a tip: focus on soaking the experience rather than on what you spot. Even if you don’t catch sight of a lion or an elephant, there’s so much beauty in what the savannah offers. Before you head back, don’t forget to look up — without any lights, the stars are absolutely breathtaking!

Your second day in Tarangire National Park. Your Altezza guide will show you the sections of Tarangire that you did not have time to visit yesterday. There are a lot of interesting locations with beautiful views, and even more African animals. In Tarangire, you can see rare species, some of which are not usually found even in the Serengeti, such as long-necked gerenuks and oryx.
Also in Tarangire, there are hyraxes - small funny animals that are the closest relatives of elephants, despite their very different size. It is very interesting to watch them, and they willingly let visitors come fairly close for photos only (remember: no touching wildlife!).
In addition, bird lovers will be interested in Tarangire because there are more than 550 species of birds here! We have good resolution binoculars in our car so you can see them even better.
A 1.5-hour walk lets you experience the wilderness up close! Offering a unique perspective, it focuses on nature in general rather than just wildlife. While you might not see as many big animals as you would on a car drive, walking allows you to notice the smaller wonders around you in the bush. You might come across creatures like mongooses, Guinea fowls, and vervet monkeys. Your guide you will help you spot fresh tracks of elephants or buffalo herds.
Keep in mind that while you may get close to some larger animals like zebras, giraffes, or antelopes, they often keep their distance or move away. Though wildlife sightings are unpredictable, this adds an exciting element of chance to your adventure! The landscape itself is stunning, with massive baobab trees, acacia woodlands, and the vast African bush. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes and long, light pants for added comfort, along with a sunhat. Sunscreen is essential, and binoculars will be useful for spotting wildlife at the distance.
