From Northern Icons to Ruaha’s Quiet Wilderness: 17 Days Across Tanzania
This 17-day journey begins in the most iconic parks of northern Tanzania and slowly leads you toward the quieter, wilder south. You start actively in Arusha National Park with a walking safari and a canoe ride on Momella Lakes, easing into the rhythm of the bush. Then come the classic landscapes – Tarangire’s baobabs, a cultural visit in Mto wa Mbu, and the dramatic views from the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With four full days in Serengeti, staying in an authentic safari lodge, you experience mornings, long horizons, and unhurried exploration. By now, you’ve seen the north in depth, not in passing! Then you fly south to Ruaha National Park – often called a paradise for introverts. Fewer vehicles, rugged landscapes, and a raw sense of space create a very different atmosphere from the north.
Together, these regions make the journey feel complete – both the famous face of Tanzania and its quieter, more personal side.

Mostly dry with occasional rains, keeping the parks vibrant. Jan-Feb and early Dec see occasional showers, while March and June tend to be more stable. A great time with fewer travelers, relaxed pace and frequent wildlife encounters.
Dry conditions reveal the savanna’s full beauty, making game drives easy and wildlife visible. Expect lively safari experiences and spectacular predator sightings, though you’ll notice more travelers than in other months.
Itinerary
The group arrives at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). Participants are met by a representative of Altezza Travel and transferred to a hotel in Arusha.
Note: Check-in starts at 2:00 PM.
Arusha National Park is one of the most exceptional and conveniently located safari destinations in northern Tanzania. Despite its relatively small size, the park boasts unmatched geographical diversity – from the rainforest slopes of Mount Meru to the scenic Momella Lakes and wide savannah plains. This variety offers a truly rich and immersive safari experience.
One of the unique highlights of Arusha is the opportunity to go on foot – it's one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are allowed. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you’ll walk through the acacia-dotted bushland, where encounters with giraffes, bushbuck antelopes, warthogs, and buffalo are possible from as close as 20–30 meters. The ranger will ensure your safety while sharing fascinating insights about the ecosystem and wildlife behavior.
On a game-drive to Momella Lakes, you can spot flamingos, hornbills, ibises, pelicans, vultures, and many other of the 200+ bird species that call the park home.
Enjoy a peaceful break from the classic Land Cruiser game drive and go canoeing at Momella Lake. During this two-hour paddling journey, you'll be surrounded by a diverse array of water birds. Wildlife such as buffaloes, antelopes, and giraffes may also come into view as they approach the shore. In clear weather, you'll be treated to the majestic view of Mount Meru. The enchanting presence of African birdlife all around will fully immerse you in the beauty and tranquility of this place. For a more varied experience, we recommend combining this activity with a 1.5-hour walking safari. The package includes safety vests, a boat, paddles, and the services of a guide.
Today your safari will take place in Tarangire National Park. This is one of the most interesting places in Tanzania! The river of the same name flows through the park, where giraffes, zebras, antelopes and buffaloes come to drink. These animals attract predators, which is why a lot of lions live in Tarangire. You will definitely see them during your trip.
In the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only source of drinking water for many kilometers around. Because of this, large herds of elephants come to Tarangire, making Tarangire the home to the largest population of elephants in Northern Tanzania for most of the year (especially June - October and December - March). Elephants are not at all intimidated by visitors to the park, and they often come quite close to cars. This is completely safe - since elephants have no enemies in their natural nature they are naturally curious and unafraid.
Tarangire National Park is also known for its ancient baobab trees. These massive trees are larger and older than any other park in continental Africa. The scenery, accented with these signatory trees is simply stunning.
Your second day in Tarangire National Park. Your Altezza guide will show you the sections of Tarangire that you did not have time to visit yesterday. There are a lot of interesting locations with beautiful views, and even more African animals. In Tarangire, you can see rare species, some of which are not usually found even in the Serengeti, such as long-necked gerenuks and oryx.
Also in Tarangire, there are hyraxes - small funny animals that are the closest relatives of elephants, despite their very different size. It is very interesting to watch them, and they willingly let visitors come fairly close for photos only (remember: no touching wildlife!).
In addition, bird lovers will be interested in Tarangire because there are more than 550 species of birds here! We have good resolution binoculars in our car so you can see them even better.
Today is your third day exploring Tarangire – and this park truly deserves it! With each passing day, you get more in tune with the rhythm of the wild. You start noticing animal behavior, small details, and hidden corners that might have gone unnoticed before.
Your Altezza guide will take you to quieter areas of the park, away from the usual tourist routes, where it feels like you have the wilderness all to yourself. You might spot a cheetah lounging under acacia branches, or a pride of lions basking in the morning sun. Some of the most unforgettable wildlife moments happen when you least expect them!
Mto wa Mbu is a village of about 18,000 people. It is a cultural melting pot of 120 different tribes peacefully co-existing in a beautiful bright mix. Here you can see the tribes' traditional houses, visit the local market and sneak a peek at the daily labor routine of the local farmers, artisans, craftsmen and painters. At the banana plantation, you'll be guided through all the varieties of this plant and the multiple ways to use it, from food to building and art materials. The art group will tell you all about the different painting styles while wood craftsmen will share their expertise on the types of local wood and the meanings behind the traditional carvings. These are only a few of the available activities at Mto Wa Mbu, but we definitely suggest topping this experience off with mbege - the traditional banana and millet beer!
Today’s journey takes you from the lowlands up into the Ngorongoro Highlands. After arriving in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you’ll stretch your legs with a guided walk along the crater rim. Led by a professional park ranger, this easy 1–2 hour hike follows a flat trail through lush montane forest.
While large animals like elephants and buffalo are rarer here than down in the crater, keep your eyes open for tracks and forest birds – and listen to the bush as it slowly reveals its secrets. At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view over the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.
After your walk, check in at a lodge perched on the edge of the crater. This is your chance to relax, soak in the silence, and enjoy the landscapes around you. At 2,286 meters above sea level, Ngorongoro can get chilly in the morning and evening – bring a warm layer for extra comfort.
Spending a few days in Ngorongoro is a wonderful choice – and not a very common one among travelers! We recommend setting out early again this morning to enjoy the crater during one of the most active periods of the day. In the soft morning light you may even spy the rare servals or caracals in the savannah grasses!
The crater is also home to a healthy lion population – around 60 lions live here as of today – making sightings quite likely. With abundant prey such as antelope, zebra, and wildebeest, lions often spend their days resting close to the roads, sometimes offering wonderful opportunities to observe their natural behavior.
Later, you can visit the picturesque Lerai Forest in the southwestern part of the crater. This lush area is one of the best places to see elephants, along with playful monkeys moving through the trees. On a game-drive toward Lake Magadi, you may also notice vibrant birdlife, including the vibrant superb starling with dazzling blue wings, and the funny guinea fowl that leave behind pretty spotted feathers wherever they go.
The crater floor lies at about 1,700 meters (5,600 ft) above sea level, so mornings can be quite cool – it’s a good idea to bring along a light jacket or sweater for the early hours.
Today’s adventure takes you to the world-famous Serengeti, in the stunning Seronera area. The park is home to over 3 million animals and stretches across an area so vast it would take 2-3 days to cross by car, giving wildlife plenty of space to roam freely. Here, you’re almost guaranteed to see lions, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras, with a good chance of spotting cheetahs, serval cats, and other rare savannah animals. The Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its unique ecosystem, dense wildlife, and the annual Great Migration. Life here inspired Disney’s Lion King, but unlike a cartoon, it’s raw, wild, and breathtaking.
Your adventure continues in the vibrant central Serengeti area. This vast landscape teems with wildlife, and it is impossible to view it all in one day. Today, your guide will lead you to new spots and highlight fascinating animals, giving you a broader view of the Serengeti’s richness. Seronera is home to some of Africa’s rarest species, including rhinos, leopards, serval cats, and caracals. Sometimes it can take several hours to spot a rare animal, but with a full day ahead, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to focus on the creatures you most want to find.
Time in сentral Serengeti is always full of surprises. Every day in the savannah brings something new – you’re unlikely to see the same scenes twice. Lions that seemed lazy yesterday may be active today, elephants that walked away before might come closer out of curiosity, and you never know what unexpected wildlife moment awaits.
This is also a great opportunity to explore the famous kopjes – ancient volcanic rock formations that shape the beautiful Seronera landscape. Many animals like to rest in their shade, which creates wonderful photographic opportunities.
You may also visit Simba Rock. It resembles the iconic scene from The Lion King, where Mufasa presents baby Simba to the savannah. Seeing this setting in real life adds a fun and memorable touch to your Serengeti experience!
A day in Serengeti reveals how perfectly balanced this ancient ecosystem truly is. Driving across the plains, you’ll notice tall termite mounds rising from the grass. These architects shape the savannah by enriching the soil and helping vegetation grow. They also serve as natural lookout towers - especially for topi antelopes, who love standing on top to scan the horizon and display their dominance. Try to spot a few today!
You could spend weeks in this amazing park and still see something new each day, as the balance of wildlife constantly shifts. Cheetahs prefer to hunt in the morning and daytime, avoiding competition with lions and hyenas, who become more active in the cooler hours of late afternoon and night. Leopards rely on stealth at dusk, moving silently through the landscape. In this ever-changing cycle of survival, no two days in the Serengeti are ever the same.
Today, you will take a bush flight from Serengeti to Ruaha National Park. Bush flights are light aircraft connections, often with a few short stops along the way, giving you a unique perspective of the country from above.
If you wish, you may enjoy a short morning game drive on the way to the airstrip, with breakfast arranged early so you can make the most of your final moments in Serengeti. Alternatively, you can have a relaxed breakfast at the lodge and transfer directly to the airstrip in time for your departure.
Upon arrival in Ruaha, you will be met by your safari guide. From there, you start your adventure right away with a game drive en route to your lodge. After lunch, check-in, and some rest, you may head out again for an afternoon or evening game drive if you feel like exploring more.
Today you will set off to explore Ruaha - the second largest national park in Tanzania. Its area is so huge that it exceeds the size of 124 countries in the world. On the first day, you will most likely see lions, hippos, giraffes, elephants and, of course, antelopes. Remoteness from the popular parks and endless expanses of savanna give Ruaha a sense of raw enthralling wilderness. Animals here feel at ease: a common sight in Ruaha is lions sprawled over the road. If you manage to drive up to them quietly, they will not even move to hide in the bush. Ruaha is a haven for lions!
The key advantage of this park is that it is never flooded with tourists, even during the high season. Imagine driving all day and seeing astounding numbers of wild animals, but not getting to meet any other people! This is what happens here in Ruaha. All nature around seems to belong to you. And maybe you are lucky to see rare species like the striped hyena or the Sable antelope?
This day will bring new surprises and new exciting encounters with the wildlife of Ruaha. The park is so huge that it will take you three full days of game drives until you get to repeat the route. The map of the park is a web of long roads leading to its most secluded corners. You can also do a drive along The Great Ruaha River. During the dry season, great numbers of animals come to these mighty waters to drink. In the backwaters, you may find hippos huddled together under water. Listen for the sound of a short roar that they make. When you hear it, point your binoculars at where the noise comes from: the stones moving in the water are backs and heads of the hippos. Never provoke hippos if you happen to meet them on land - when frightened, these multi-ton bods can reach the speed of up to 30 km/h. Constellation of islands in the middle of the river often serve as rest pads for crocodiles lying on them with their mouths open - this is how they cool their bodies. Watching them with binoculars is super interesting, but try not to make noise, otherwise the crocodiles will quickly slide into water. The guide will serve your lunch at one of the set up lunch spots that will treat you to simply amazing views of the river and surroundings!
A night safari lasts a couple of hours, usually starting right after dinner. At night, savannah transforms into a different world, where nocturnal animals like genets, civet cats, porcupines, and adorable bush babies come into spotlight. A chance of seeing predators who mostly hunt at night — like lions and elusive leopards — will keep you on the edge of your seat. Familiar "daytime" animals are revealed in a whole new light — literally! Your guide's special wildlife-friendly torchlight might catch sight of hippos cutting through the bush or a herd of buffalos at rest.
Night drives are less popular due to the reduced chances of seeing animals, but this often means you'll have the landscape to yourself. The thrill is greater at night, as the limited view and sounds of the bush suggest wildlife is near, even if unseen. Here's a tip: focus on soaking the experience rather than on what you spot. Even if you don’t catch sight of a lion or an elephant, there’s so much beauty in what the savannah offers. Before you head back, don’t forget to look up — without any lights, the stars are absolutely breathtaking!
Ruaha Park invites you to continue your journey through the wilderness! Ruaha is home to so many antelope species that counting and memorizing their distinguishing features is entertainment of its own. The greater and lesser kudu have as-if chalk-drawn thin stripes across their bodies, and males boast beautiful screw horns. The Sable antelopes come in glistening coal-black coats and horns like two curved sabers. The Roan antelopes wear a black mask with white spots around the eyes. Grant's gazelle with their beige coats, white bellies and lyre-shaped horns are one of the most graceful ungulates you will find in the savanna. Antelopes come in many other exciting varieties. If you're lucky, you might even come across a fawny-colored Liechtenstein's hartebeest that has distinctive back-curved s-shape horns.
Be on the lookout for other animals too: buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs. Don't forget to watch the birds. Bright green black-collared lovebirds, graceful ashy starlings and several hundred more species of beautiful birds fly in the park, ostriches running on the ground. Predatory African fish eagles and bateleurs hunt near the water.
Take in the scenery: landscapes opening from the uplands are magnificent and pleasing to the eye. Forests here are interspersed with savannahs, in open spaces you can see many picturesque palm trees and baobabs.
Today, take it easy and enjoy a slow morning. Have a relaxed breakfast at the lodge, soak in the views, and take a moment to just unwind before heading to the airstrip.
Your flight will carry you to your next destination or back home, but there’s still time to enjoy the calm beauty of Ruaha one last time. Listen to the birds, watch the light shift over the savannah, and maybe spot a few animals near the lodge - a great ending to an amazing adventure.
Flight on this day is not included in the tour price - please let us know your plans, and we will assist with the flight booking.

A few things to note:
- Accommodation is shared in twin/double rooms by default, unless requested and agreed otherwise. Single supplement is available upon request and at an extra cost. Please refer to your tour itinerary to see your accommodation arrangements.
- Tented lodges are the most common type of accommodation in savannah. Many of them work on solar energy. This sometimes means bucket showers, limited wi-fi and no hair dryers, all in an effort to reduce environmental impact. We encourage you to do some basic research on the accommodations in your program to ensure the safari matches your travel style.
Breakfasts and dinners are typically served at a lodge’s restaurant and can be a buffet-style or an a la carte menu, depending on the hotel or season.

A few things to note:
- Arusha-based accommodations usually include breakfast only, unless requested and agreed otherwise - please check your tour itinerary for full meal details.
- Drinks like tea, coffee, and alcohol at safari lodges are usually ordered and paid for separately, unless stated otherwise. This way, you’re only paying for what you actually want.

All our guides are fully licensed by Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (TANAPA), and must pass a strict selection process when hired by Altezza, including a more than a 2-hour exam with over a hundred specific questions on local wildlife, geography, and park regulations. Further on, each guide is tested “in the field” by our safari manager. To stay sharp, they also undergo regular refresher training at Altezza.
In addition to English and Swahili, our guides speak French, Spanish, or German. If you prefer a guide who speaks one of these languages, please let your travel expert know in advance, as availability is limited and this service is offered at an additional cost.
In our YouTube video here, you can learn more about our safari guides!
At Altezza, we make your safari experience smooth and worry-free by including all national park fees in the cost of your tour. Tanzania’s park fees system can be complex, with separate fees for park entry, conservation, and even additional concession fees for overnight stays within the parks. These fees vary depending on the park and the type of accommodation, making it a tricky process for travelers to navigate on their own.
With Altezza, you can be sure there are no surprising extra local payments. Our safari office specialists take care of all the details for you in advance, ensuring that every necessary fee is paid before the start of your adventure. This means no delays or paperwork at park entry points, allowing you to focus on what matters most: enjoying your time in Tanzania! Everything is covered, supporting both conservation efforts and the local communities that protect these extraordinary places.
When you book with Altezza Travel, your tour will be in the good hands of 200 dedicated professionals who are committed to ensuring that your tour is an amazing experience. Our team includes experts in reservation, transfer planning, expeditions, customer experience, logistics, and other areas, each responsible for their specific role in the process. We also have our hotel, store-keeping, transfer and other teams, whose contribution is essential and always available. They work together seamlessly to ensure that every aspect of your tour is carefully planned and executed to the highest standard.
The travel consultants team is available to assist you 24/7. You can easily reach out to your manager through various channels such as messengers, email, phone, or any other convenient method. We are always here to answer your questions and address any concerns you may have, and our support team works across different time zones.
Our safari packages include AMREF Flying Doctors air ambulance service by default. In the rare event of a medical emergency, you will have access to fast, efficient, and professional air transportation to the nearest hospital or medical facility. Should an emergency arise, we handle all necessary calls to the evacuation service, ensuring a swift response.
This service is particularly valuable when traveling in remote areas where direct access to medical assistance may be limited or unavailable.
Please note that while air transportation is fully covered, medical services at the hospital are not. These should be covered by the traveler individually or through their travel insurance provider.
Altezza Travel is the first adventure operator in Tanzania to develop its own travel planning software. With our new system, you no longer need to provide long lists of information via email. Instead, you can simply fill out the Personal Trip Board in the Altezza Family travel portal.
This user-friendly platform allows you to provide us with details about your arrival and departure information, dietary plan, insurance and passport information for the necessary permits. You can also use the form to inform us about any allergies or important medical information that we should be aware of before you start your adventure.
The security of your personal information is of utmost importance to our team. Our system is fully secure and uses SSL encryption provided by Cloudflare Inc, a leading provider of cloud security services worldwide. This means that all data transmitted through our system is fully encrypted and secure. Rest assured that only authorized personnel at Altezza Travel will have access to your data.
What's more, in your Personal Trip Board, you can customize your safari experience by adding extra snacks if you enjoy having something tasty on the go - on top of the standard soft drinks and water available in each Land Cruiser. Our Safari Snack Bar option lets you choose your favorite snacks before your trip, and our storage team will pass your order to your guide. On the first day of your safari, you'll find your personalized snack selection ready in the vehicle, so you can enjoy your treats while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Unlike other companies where a sales manager acts as an intermediary between you and the local operations team in Tanzania, our system transmits your information directly to the dashboard of the person in charge. This direct communication line vastly minimizes the chance of human error.
For example, let's say you've indicated your arrival time in our system. In the past, your manager would have had to manually add it to our calendar, and our transfer manager would have had to assign a driver. With so many people arriving in Tanzania, there was always a risk of human error.
But with the new communication system, your arrival time information is instantly transmitted to the dashboard of our transfer manager. The system automatically assigns an available driver to your trip, and activates GPS tracking to monitor their progress. If the driver misses any check-points on the way, the system will alert the transfer manager to take corrective action and ensure that you're picked up on time.
We use similar streamlined communication flows for all our travel operations. For instance, all safari requests are processed through our software, which automatically assigns available guides and vehicles for your trip. Hotel reservations are verified by our system to make sure there are no discrepancies with your customized itinerary. Our safari managers then review and ensure that all data is correctly handled. Your dietary requirements are shared with our reservations office and safari lodges to ensure they are prepared to accommodate your individual needs or restrictions. With this system, you can be confident that every detail of your trip is taken care of and that there's zero risk of losing any critical information along the way.
What's more, our user-friendly system is designed to make travel planning fun and engaging. In addition to the intuitive interface, we've added a special feature that turns filling in the required information into a game. As you provide the necessary details for the organization of your trip, you'll receive pop-ups with interesting information about African animals. This way, you can learn more about the wildlife you'll be seeing during your adventure while completing the travel-related paperwork.
At Altezza Travel, we believe that travel planning should be easy, enjoyable, and informative. Our innovative system is just one of the many ways we strive to provide exceptional service to our clients.
When you choose Altezza Travel for your trip, you're making a meaningful contribution to the development of local communities in Tanzania. We're committed to sustainability, and as part of our pledge, we allocate a part of our profits to various social responsibility initiatives. Here are some examples:
- We're proud to be one of the first donors to the Serengeti De-snaring Project, a conservation initiative of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. The project is working to remove snares, traps, and other poaching devices from Tanzania's national parks.
- In 2023, we partnered with Nature Tanzania and invested over $12,000 to save the population of the Long-billed Tailorbird. A special conservation site has been established in the Amani Forest, where our team conducts extensive research and conservation operations. With fewer than 250 birds remaining, this species is considered 'critically endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and urgent action is needed to prevent their extinction.
- We donate $1,000 annually to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary. Black rhinos in Tanzania are critically endangered due to poaching. The Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, along with the Moru Kopjes area in Serengeti National Park, are the only places where black rhinos are still present in critically low numbers. Mkomazi is home to the larger population, but it still needs support. One of the recent newborns at Mkomazi was named Altezza by the park staff, and we are proud to sponsor and care for this baby rhino!
- In response to the growing crisis of deforestation, we have undertaken several large-scale tree-planting efforts on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and in the surrounding areas. We are currently planning additional reforestation activities to further combat the issue.
- Altezza Travel is on a mission to improve the lives of students in the remote Materuni area. Over 50 local students have been attending a school with dilapidated classrooms, a leaking roof, and a lack of essential educational materials. The teachers have been doing their best to maintain a positive learning environment, but they are struggling with limited resources. That's where Altezza Travel stepped in. We began funding the renovation of the school, providing building materials, and supplying educational materials as well as sports equipment. Our goal is to create a brighter future for these children by providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
- Creating job opportunities is a powerful way to support local communities. We're proud that Altezza has become a sought-after employer for both experienced professionals and fresh graduates. As an equal opportunity employer, we celebrate Tanzania's diverse workforce, focusing on motivation and commitment when hiring for office positions, and welcoming fresh graduates and career-changers. To keep our team competitive, we provide ongoing training, personalized development plans, and access to industry-leading resources.
- We're committed to using local suppliers for all our operations and have made a deliberate decision to avoid large agricultural companies in favor of small farmers from the surrounding communities.
- Finally, on February 5, 2025, Altezza Travel earned the prestigious Travelife Certification - one of the highest international standards for sustainability in tourism. This isn’t just a badge - it confirms that our efforts in employee welfare, community support, and environmental conservation are real and measurable. To qualify, companies must meet over 160 strict criteria across operations, sustainability management, supplier relations, and guest communication. Altezza is also a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, further underlining our dedication to responsible travel.
- International flights
Our safari packages don’t include international flights. You’ll be responsible for covering those costs separately. Feel free to contact your manager to get recommendations about the airlines operating flights to Tanzania.
- Tips to the safari guide
Tipping your guide is a common and appreciated gesture in the tourism world. While never required at Altezza Travel, we do encourage guests to tip their safari guides if you're happy with the service. A typical recommendation is $30-$50 per day per vehicle.
If your itinerary includes additional activities like nature walks, night game drives, or walking safaris, you may also consider tipping the park ranger or specialist guide who accompanies your group. A customary tip is $10-20 USD per group. These experts play an important role in enhancing your safari experience.
- Visa fee
Most nationals are required to pay USD 50 for a one-time, single-entry 90-day visa. USA nationals, however, are required to pay $100 for a multi-entry visa. Contact our travel advisors to learn more about Tanzania visa rules and requirements.
- Single supplement
Our safari tours include shared accommodation in a twin/double room by default. If you’d like to arrange a single room, please reach out to our travel experts in advance. Single accommodation can be booked at an extra cost and subject to availability.
- Travel insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended for a safari - and in many cases, it’s required. There are no specific insurance policies just for safaris, but a good travel insurance plan should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations or delays, and lost or delayed luggage. While our packages include air ambulance coverage through AMREF Flying Doctors, any hospital treatment and other associated costs should be covered either by your travel insurance or paid personally. Always check that your policy is valid in Tanzania.
