On Kilimanjaro expeditions, all the main routes to the summit pass over rocky terrain and skirt around glaciers, so crampons and ice axes are not necessary. However, microspikes can be useful during the rainy season. More on that below.

Crampons are metal frames with wedge-shaped spikes that attach to trekking boots. They are used in mountaineering and alpine trekking primarily for walking on ice. The long, sharp points dig deep into snow and ice, providing solid traction even on vertical surfaces.

Crampons are not needed on Kilimanjaro.

Since all expeditions bypass the ice, there is no need for crampons. We're showing them here just so you know what they look like and don't confuse them with microspikes.

Microspikes are lightweight traction devices consisting of small metal spikes connected by chains, designed to be slipped over trekking or hiking boots. They improve grip on icy or slippery terrain. Sometimes called mini-crampons, shoe spikes, or spiked chains, they are distinct from full crampons, which are heavier and intended for technical mountaineering on steep ice.

Microspikes offer significantly better traction than the soles of any hiking boots. They help on slippery surfaces, slushy snow, and wet rocks. Most climbers carry trekking poles, which help with balance, especially on inclines, but poles alone may not be enough on slick ground. That’s why microspikes are still recommended.

Microspikes offer extra safety on Kilimanjaro, especially during the rainy season. We strongly recommend bringing a pair. If you don’t own any, you can rent them from us.

When do you definitely need microspikes on Kilimanjaro?

During the rainy season (October through early June), there is significant precipitation. If your expedition takes place during this time, when Kilimanjaro’s summit is snow-covered, you should bring microspikes.

Many climbers have successfully summited Kilimanjaro without microspikes. In most of those cases, other climbers had already passed earlier, softening the snow and improving traction. But if you're among the first to summit that day, microspikes will come in handy. They significantly reduce the risk of slipping and injury.

If you're climbing Kilimanjaro with Altezza Travel, you can rent microspikes from us. We always keep them in stock at our gear warehouse, so there’s no need to buy them just for one expedition. You’ll also find other essential gear available there. Check out our gear checklist for Kilimanjaro expeditions.
