This safari is built for travelers who want to go far beyond the classic routes! You begin in Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and least-visited parks. In the dry season, rivers shrink and wildlife gathers in numbers - huge pods of hippos, massive crocodiles stacked along the banks, and predators moving through open floodplains.
From Katavi, you fly to Mahale Mountains, where the rhythm changes completely. Instead of savanna, you enter forested mountains along Lake Tanganyika, home to one of Africa’s most famous wild chimpanzee populations. Chimp trekking here is intimate: hiking through lush forest, listening for calls, and then suddenly standing meters away from a family group going about their day.
The contrast is what makes this journey special: crocs and hippos in dry riverbeds, then chimps in misty forest; open plains, then jungle-covered mountains. If you want raw nature, very few other tourists, and stories that most travelers simply don’t have - this tour is for you!
Domestic flights between Arusha, Katavi and Mahale are included.

Mostly dry with occasional rains, keeping the parks vibrant. Jan-Feb and early Dec see occasional showers, while March and June tend to be more stable. A great time with fewer travelers, relaxed pace and frequent wildlife encounters.
Dry conditions reveal the savanna’s full beauty, making game drives easy and wildlife visible. Expect lively safari experiences and spectacular predator sightings, though you’ll notice more travelers than in other months.

Today, you will visit a national park that ranks among the most abundant in both plant and animal life. Katavi holds a place in the top six largest parks in the country. Otto von Bismarck, a passionate hunter and lover of wild nature, once favored these areas, but today they draw visitors for safaris. Far removed from overcrowded tourist roads, here you will witness Africa as it was a couple of centuries ago. Interestingly, it is believed that Katavi sees fewer visitors in a year than the Serengeti does in just one day.
Katavi is renowned for its profusion of hippos and crocodiles that inhabit the local rivers and lakes. The park is home to several seasonal lakes and swamps that dry out significantly during the dry season, allowing frequent sightings of dozens or even hundreds of hippos huddled together in small water bodies.
Across the expansive plains of Katisunga, herds of giraffes, zebras, and elephants freely roam. The area is so populated with buffaloes that encountering a herd will likely mean seeing hundreds of these majestic creatures. If you're observant enough, you might spot warthogs, known around the world as Pumbas, as well as hyenas, servals, caracals, and even zebra mongooses, named for the stripes on their backs.
And don’t forget about the antelopes! Katavi is home to luxurious topis, graceful impalas, beautiful bushbucks in the forests, small duikers, and waterbucks near the water bodies. Notably, Katavi is one of only two unique places housing the rare Puku, once studied by David Livingstone. Embrace the role of an explorer and immerse yourself in the world of Africa's wild animals.
Your safari program continues in one of Tanzania's most remote inland national parks. Don't miss the opportunity to head out on safari as early in the morning as possible, as this is the time when you can catch large predators freely roaming the clearings between trees. The park is home to many lions, as well as leopards and cheetahs. You might be lucky enough to soon see these big cats on the ground or lounging on thick tree branches.
Pay attention to the monkeys: in Katavi, you can see trees literally festooned with blue monkeys, Ugandan red colobuses, red-tailed monkeys, and vervets. But be careful at rest stops and picnic sites — these mischievous thieves sneak into cars through open windows and raised roofs to steal food. The plains, forests, and floodable meadows of Katavi are home to hundreds of bird species. Around 400 species are observed here, including some that are very rare and highly sought after by birders, such as the Shoebill. The Rocket-tailed Roller and the Broad-tailed Paradise Whydah impress with the beauty of their plumage, and near the water, you may spot the Squacco Heron and Great White Pelican. To observe the birds, make use of the binoculars in your vehicle.
If time permits, you can visit one of Katavi's three waterfalls: Chorangwa, Lukima, and Ndido. On a hot day, it's delightful to refresh oneself under the cool water's spray.
Today you arrive at Mahale airstrip and are transferred by boat across the waters of Lake Tanganyika to Greystoke Mahale inside the national park. Once at the lodge, enjoy a gentle afternoon exploring the lakeshore by canoe or boat, watching for African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and even monitor lizards along the water’s edge. Keep an eye out for small mammals and colorful birdlife in the forest fringes near the lodge. Sundowners on the terrace or a quiet evening by the lake offer the perfect way to reflect on your first day in this stunning wilderness.
Your adventure begins with a chimpanzee trek led by expert guides. Follow the forest trails in search of playful chimpanzee troops, observing their grooming, social interactions, and curious behaviors. While tracking chimps, you may also spot red colobus monkeys, bushbucks, red duikers and an array of forest birds. The Mahale Mountains have been a focus of long-term chimpanzee research, providing unique insights into their social lives.
Chimp trekking in Mahale can be physically demanding, and the camp guide reserves the right to restrict participation if a guest is not fit enough and may slow down the group. Proper walking shoes or trekking boots are required. Only one chimp trek is offered per full day, usually in the morning. Time spent with the chimpanzees is strictly limited to one hour, while the trekking duration itself may vary depending on their location. Each group is limited to a maximum of six guests.
Today is another chance for chimpanzee trekking, perhaps discovering different troops or observing new behaviors. Wander through lush forest paths and marvel at ancient strangler figs, listen to the calls of forest birds, and watch for small mammals along the trails. Your guides may take you to hidden viewpoints or quiet clearings, offering extraordinary photo opportunities. After the trek, relax at the lodge, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and beautiful views over Lake Tanganyika.
Today is perfect for slowing down and soaking it all in - whether that’s a canoe ride on Lake Tanganyika or simply birdwatching along the shoreline. Keep an eye on the forest line along the shore - you can often spot primates moving through the trees, including chimpanzees or red colobus monkeys, as well as baboons, antelopes, hornbills, and colorful kingfishers.
Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest lake in the world and one of the oldest, home to more than 250 fish species found nowhere else on Earth. Even a simple boat ride can turn into something special - through the clear waters, you may catch glimpses of vibrant cichlids and other unique underwater life quietly moving beneath the surface.
Today marks the end of your time in Mahale and the start of your onward journey. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, take a last stroll around the property, and soak in the peaceful surroundings one final time. When you’re ready, your guide will help with check-out and transfer you to the airstrip for your flight, making for a calm and comfortable farewell to this beautiful part of Tanzania.
Please note that this flight is not included in the tour and depends on your final destination. We will be happy to help you book it.
Altezza driver will pick you up from your accommodations and take you to the airport. If you're flying out with an international flight, please be ready to leave the hotel 4 hours before the scheduled take-off. If you're taking a domestic flight, you'll need to leave 3 hours before the flight.
We wish you a pleasant flight!
