About Altezza About Altezza

In the early 1990s, around 1,000 people visited Mount Kilimanjaro each year. By 2025, that number had grown to over 60,000—one of the highest growth rates among popular mountain destinations worldwide. This increase puts serious pressure on the mountain's fragile ecosystems. If we want future generations to experience Kilimanjaro as we know it today, we must act to reduce the impact.

One of the many steps we’ve taken is joining the Leave No Trace organization in 2023. Leave No Trace promotes responsible outdoor ethics worldwide. Its core principles include:

  • Planning ahead and preparing for responsible travel
  • Traveling and camping on durable surfaces
  • Disposing of waste properly
  • Leaving what you find
  • Minimizing campfire impacts
  • Respecting wildlife
  • Being considerate of other visitors

These principles align closely with the values we hold at Altezza Travel. As a Travelife-certified tour operator, we are committed to protecting Tanzania’s wildlife.

Our conservation efforts include tree-planting programs, covering veterinary costs for animals unable to survive in the wild, and supporting wildlife research in partnership with Tanzania National Parks. We also fund the Serengeti de-snaring project and multiple other conservation initiatives across the country.

Our sustainability principles extend not only to the wildlife, but also to our mountain crews. We implement them through our membership in the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project

What Leave No Trace means to us

Our membership in Leave No Trace has two dimensions:

Keeping Mt Kilimanjaro clean

First, we plan every mountain expedition to leave no trace. At every camp on Kilimanjaro, we provide trash bins so guests can dispose of waste responsibly. Each expedition team includes a porter whose job is to ensure that no trash is left behind by guests or crew. We also go a step further by picking up any litter we find on the trails – most often snack packaging or empty bottles.

We also organize dedicated Kilimanjaro cleanup climbs where the main goal is to collect waste from the slopes. In 2024 alone, we gathered over 500 kilograms of waste left by other expeditions on the mountain. Encouragingly, despite the increasing number of visitors, Kilimanjaro is noticeably cleaner today than it was five or six years ago.

In 2025, we are launching Altezza Academy, a training initiative for our guides and porters. Alongside medical and educational programs, the academy will emphasize the importance of Leave No Trace principles, ensuring that every member of our mountain team is equipped to protect the environment and promote responsible tourism.

Supporting Leave No Trace Worldwide

Leave No Trace operates globally, promoting sustainable tourism in many of the world’s most popular destinations. As a nonprofit, it depends on donations to continue its work.

Since 2022, Altezza Travel has supported the organization by donating one Kilimanjaro expedition per year for their charity auctions. These climbs are listed on the Leave No Trace platform, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the organization. We provide full service on all routes and durations, honoring the booking as we would for any guest.

In 2025, we plan to increase the scale of our contribution to further support Leave No Trace’s mission and expand our cooperation.
